Ladies and gentlemen, I may antagonize some of you with this post, but #enoughisenough.
I know I am but one person in this fight that I am about to explain to you, but I believe there are people out there who agree with me.
Just a few minutes ago, the following "conversation" happened on Facebook.
I blacked out the related names, but if you are friends with the person who wrote the original Facebook status, you saw my little outburst.
Some of you may think I am mean for apparently lashing out at this random person--who I do not know--but I am hoping most of you see the point I was trying to make.
This is not about LOL or LMFAOROTFL, its abt d laznss dat mks ppl type lik dey r suffrin frm a mntal dsorder--no offense to the people who actually have a disorder.
The first time I saw this type of "wrtn", I thought the person was having a seizure while typing--which would have been a feat.
This is not about "proper" English. It is about plain old, simple, English. There are abbreviations, and then there is the type of typing that gives people a headache trying to figure out what a person is saying.
I don't want to feel as if I have dyslexia every time I try to read one of these wall posts, comments, etc.
Don't try and tell me this is "slang". Slang usage would be replacing "real" words with the "colloquial" terms.
This is a systematic attempt by some Nigerians to invent their own Facebook language and give the rest of us migraines while we try to figure out just what on earth is being said. Its not as if these are "generally acceptable" abbreviations like LOL, or LWKMD, etc. These are abbreviations that are made up completely at the discretion of the person typing. So, if I am not in your head, how the hell am I supposed to understand what you meant to write?
Consider this other post by the same person above.
Notice the "smtyms" usage. It could very well have been, "smtyms", "somtims", "sumtimes", "smtimes"
Don't even get me started on the improper tense usage.
Is it okay? No.
Will this blog post change anything? Probably not, but I want to share with everyone and give others a chance to agree or disagree with me.
If you are one of the culprits, and you know yourselves, I beseech you to consider the rest of us trying to struggle along with your abbreviated conversations.
If you don't want to consider other people, consider yourself. This is how bad habits start. I have a feeling many of you will find yourselves one day in an office or class-work setting typing a sentence like, "Wld u be abl 2 go ovr d rprt 2mrw?". Considering how much time many of you spend on Facebook, I'm sure it will happen soon enough.
A word is enough for the wise.
Actually, let me put it in a way you'll understand. A wrd iz nuff 4 d wyze.
